ICANN and Transition of NTIAâs Stewardship
Last week, I visited the ICANN50 meeting in London. The meeting was held at a location well known to us at the IETF â the Hilton London Metropole. The meeting drew a record 3100 attendees on site, ranging from governments to businesses, civil society, and technical community. The hot topic of the week was the transition of NTIAâs stewardship of the IANA functions to the global multi-stakeholder community. This topic was discussed at almost very meeting during the week.

"The Internet has an unlimited future"
Addressing the Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum in Bonn, U.S. Internet pioneer Vint Cerf foresees that "the network has only invented one or two percent of all the possible applications that it could support."

The byzantine, meandering discussion on the future of the internet
Last week, nearly 3,500 people met in London to discuss management of the internet. Yet judging from the media coverage, it was less newsworthy than the arrival of an app called Yo. Apart from a flare-up from a French government minister at one point of proceedings (on protecting wine domains), the whole show went largely unnoticed.

Real accountability? Itâs all in the execution... Emily Taylor looks into the issue of ICANN and accountability
... The US Government recently announced its willingness to withdraw from sole oversight of the IANA function, so long as a suitable multistakeholder alternative can be found. Members of the ICANN community have already burst into action to define suitable mechanisms. Steve del Bianco, amongst others, has voiced concern that, whatever the outcome, we must not end up with an unaccountable ICANN. Tony Bennâs five questions might serve as a useful guide.

Au Revoir to the Open Internet: Authoritarian regimes want more control over the Web. Now France has joined the movement.
When the Obama administration announced that the U.S. would end its stewardship of the open Internet, critics warned that Russia and China would take advantage of the American surrender. We didn't anticipate that supposed friends of the multistakeholder system of self-governance would also be eager to grab control.

Microsoftâs latest takedown of a malware operation, announced Monday and involving the infrastructure of several malware families, has, like many of the companyâs actions, elicited strong opinions on both sides of the issue from security researchers, activists and others with a stake in the game. This takedown didnât involve simply hitting the C2 infrastructure of a botnet, but also includes legal action against a hosting company, No-IP.com, which has called out Microsoft for its tactics and raised a lot of questions in the security community, as well.

Microsoft Says âTechnical Errorâ Led to Legitimate No-IP Customers Losing Service
In the course of its actions to take down a major malware operation, Microsoft seized more than 20 domains from No-IP.com, a hosting provider in Nevada. Microsoft now admits that the company made a technical mistake as part of that takedown, an errors that resulted in legitimate No-IP.com customers losing service.

Are U.S. Marketers Falling Behind in the Domain Game?
The Association of National Advertisers (ANA) is a talented group of individuals that are good at their job. France Should Put A Cork In It About New Wine Web Domains
Wine and governing the Internet do not mix. Last week, France expressed its vehement opposition to the creation of new â.wineâ and â.vinâ web domains, threatening to derail important Internet policy discussions as well as U.S.-EU trade talks, if it does not get its way. France would be wise to change course before it plays into the hands of Russia, China, Iran, and other countries that seek to cripple the free and open Internet.
